French-Congolese striker Jean-Philippe Mateta targeted by Inter and AC Milan in summer transfer battle

French-Congolese striker Jean-Philippe Mateta targeted by Inter and AC Milan in summer transfer battle

Jean-Philippe Mateta is at the centre of a potential tug-of-war between Serie A giants Inter Milan and AC Milan, as both clubs eye a summer move for the in-form Crystal Palace striker.

The 27-year-old French-born forward, who also holds Congolese heritage, is reportedly attracting strong interest from the two Milan clubs ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

With just one year remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, Mateta’s situation has prompted both Italian sides to assess the possibility of bringing him to the San Siro.

While Mateta remains under contract with the Premier League side until 2026, there is growing belief that the Eagles could be open to negotiating a transfer, particularly if a suitable offer is tabled. His recent form has only intensified speculation, with the striker enjoying a prolific 2024–25 campaign.

Italian Interest Mounts as Mateta Hits Career Form

Inter Milan, who continue to build on the tactical foundations of their preferred 3-5-2 formation, are believed to be targeting Mateta as a dynamic addition to their attacking unit.

The Frenchman’s physical presence, aerial ability, and sharp movement in the box appear to align well with the club’s forward structure.

Their city rivals, AC Milan, are also said to be monitoring Mateta closely. Following an inconsistent spell in front of goal during recent months, the Rossoneri are eager to inject fresh energy into their attack.

Club executives are reportedly convinced that Mateta’s experience and recent performances could provide the solution to their offensive concerns.

Should the interest materialise into formal offers, it could set up a fierce battle between the two Milan clubs to secure the forward’s signature.

A Career Defined by Gradual Ascent

Mateta’s career trajectory reflects a steady progression through Europe’s major leagues. He began his professional journey in France with Châteauroux before joining Olympique Lyonnais, followed by a loan spell at Le Havre.

In 2018, he made the move to Germany, signing for Mainz, where he began to attract international attention with his goal-scoring exploits in the Bundesliga.

His transfer to Crystal Palace in January 2021 initially came with challenges, as he took time to adapt to the pace and physicality of English football.

However, persistence and development saw him grow into a key figure in Palace’s attacking setup.

Now in the final stretch of his fourth season in England, Mateta is enjoying arguably the best spell of his career.

Impressive Season Spurs Transfer Speculation

Mateta has been a standout performer for Palace in the current campaign, notching 17 goals and contributing four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

His form has not gone unnoticed, with scouts from across Europe reportedly tracking his performances closely.

At 27, he appears to be entering the peak of his career, and a move to Serie A could represent both a new challenge and a fresh platform to showcase his talent.

For Crystal Palace, the prospect of cashing in on a player with just one year left on his deal may be a practical decision, especially with interest from two of Europe’s most historically successful clubs.

As the summer window approaches, the battle for Jean-Philippe Mateta’s signature could become one of the more intriguing storylines in the transfer market, with both Milan clubs eager to gain the upper hand.
