Chelsea defender Axel Disasi could make a surprise return to first-team action as the Blues gear up for their Champions League meeting with Marseille.
Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed that Tosin Adarabioyo will be sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring injury, opening the door for Disasi, who has spent over a year away from Chelsea’s senior squad.
The 27-year-old’s return to first-team training this week signals a potential opportunity to stake his claim in European competition.
A career reset at Chelsea
Disasi’s path to this point has been far from straightforward. Previously placed on the transfer list by former manager Enzo Maresca, the defender spent last season on loan at Aston Villa and failed to secure a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge.
The Frenchman of Congolese descent has not featured for Chelsea since January 20, 2025, when he played against Wolves, leaving him out of the spotlight for more than 12 months. With the Champions League stage offering a high-profile platform, Disasi now has a chance to demonstrate his abilities to clubs in England, Italy, and France.
Rosenior emphasizes communication and fitness
Rosenior stressed that discussions with Disasi had been thorough and constructive. “My decision on Axel, I had a really good meeting with him a couple of days ago. I wanted to catch up with him, see where he was in terms of his career… it was only right for me to have a conversation with him,” Rosenior said.
He added that Disasi remains behind in match fitness, but the club will work closely with him to get him ready for first-team action.
Opportunity on the European stage
The Marseille clash offers more than just a game; it represents a potential turning point for Disasi’s Chelsea career. A strong performance could revive his standing at Stamford Bridge or attract renewed interest from top clubs abroad.
