French-Central African defender Kurt Zouma joins CFR Cluj in bid to revive career
Kurt Zouma has signed with Romanian side CFR Cluj, marking a fresh chapter in his career after successful spells in England and a recent stint in Saudi Arabia.
The six-time Romanian champions, currently 14th in the domestic league, will look to Zouma’s wealth of experience to reinforce their defensive line and push for a return to the summit of Romanian football.
The 29-year-old defender first rose to prominence at AS Saint-Étienne, where he made over 60 appearances and lifted the Coupe de la Ligue in 2013.
His performances in Ligue 1 earned him a move to Chelsea, where he would go on to enjoy a trophy-laden tenure. Zouma featured 151 times for the London club, winning two Premier League titles in 2015 and 2017, as well as the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in 2021.
He also celebrated a League Cup triumph in 2015, cementing his reputation as a reliable and physically imposing central defender.
Zouma’s Premier League journey extended beyond Stamford Bridge, with loan spells at Stoke City and Everton helping him establish himself as one of the division’s most dependable defenders.
In 2021, he joined West Ham United, where he became a key figure in their backline and played a pivotal role in their UEFA Europa Conference League triumph in 2023.
Over the course of his time in England, Zouma amassed more than 100 appearances for West Ham, underlining his consistency at the highest level of European football.
On the international stage, Zouma has represented France at every level. He was part of the squad that won the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2013 and has earned 11 senior caps for Les Bleus, scoring once for his country.
After leaving English football, Zouma moved to Saudi Arabia, signing for Al-Orobah in the Saudi Pro League. His time in the Middle East offered a new challenge, has opted to continue his career in Europe, choosing Romania as the next destination.
CFR Cluj, known for their domestic success and regular appearances in European competitions, will rely heavily on Zouma’s leadership qualities as they aim to climb back up the league standings.
The signing represents a significant coup for Cluj, who have made no secret of their ambition to strengthen their squad. Zouma’s arrival is expected to bring stability to a defence that has struggled for form this season, and his wealth of top-flight and international experience could prove instrumental in the club’s pursuit of silverware.
For Zouma, the move offers an opportunity to reignite his career after years competing in some of the world’s toughest leagues.
With his proven track record and commanding presence, the French centre-back will be expected to play a leading role both on and off the pitch as Cluj look to reassert themselves as one of Romanian football’s dominant forces.
