Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike has revealed that a move to Newcastle United nearly became reality last year, before he ultimately opted for Anfield.
Six months prior to his summer transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt, the French forward was the subject of intense interest from the Magpies, who were reportedly keen on adding him to their attacking options.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Newcastle at Anfield on Saturday, the French international of Cameroonian descent was asked about how close he came to joining the northeast club.
“You’re in trouble,” he joked to BBC Radio Merseyside. “No, obviously, we were close (to a move), but I made my choice. I knew where I wanted to come and I’m where I wanted to come, and that’s all I can give to you.”
Ekitike’s comments underscore the deliberate decision-making behind his transfer. Despite Newcastle’s pursuit, he made a conscious choice to join Liverpool, prioritising the club’s style, ambitions, and environment.
The 23-year-old’s measured approach appears to have paid off, with him now integrated into Jurgen Klopp’s squad and preparing for one of the season’s notable fixtures.
Addressing the prospect of facing Newcastle fans at Anfield, Ekitike remained unfazed.
“I don’t care, I play for Liverpool and I have my fans here,” he said. “We’ve played there already (at St James’ Park) and we won, so hopefully we’ll have a great week of working, and I don’t care about this—I just want to play, and that’s the most important thing.”
The striker’s focus remains on his contributions for Liverpool rather than speculation over past transfer links.
