French-Algerian midfielder Rayan Cherki tipped to miss France’s World Cup squad

Former France coach Raymond Domenech has cast doubt on Rayan Cherki’s prospects of reaching the World Cup, arguing that the Manchester City midfielder faces too much competition for Didier Deschamps’s final squad.

The comments arrive as France weigh their options for the tournament, with several established attackers contesting a limited number of places.

Cherki, who is of Algerian heritage, earned consecutive call-ups in October and November and has been part of France’s evolving midfield and forward pool.

His inclusion in recent camps signalled growing confidence in his development. However, Domenech believes those appearances should not be interpreted as a guarantee of selection, especially with Deschamps expected to trim his group closer to the tournament.

Speaking on L’Equipe TV, Domenech questioned the midfielder’s chances, highlighting the depth of talent competing in his position.

He pointed to the emergence of Maghnes Akliouche, the rise of Michael Olise, and the return of Christopher Nkunku as major obstacles for the 22-year-old.

“(Maghnes) Akliouche, (Michael) Olise, and (Christopher) Nkunku are his competitors. A place in the World Cup squad?

“I don’t believe it!”

Cherki’s technical creativity and ability to operate across attacking roles have long made him one of the most discussed young players in French football.

His switch to Manchester City this season was seen as a step toward refining his tactical discipline and sharpening the decision-making required at international level.

Despite these gains, Domenech believes Deschamps values reliability and experience in tournament settings, especially in attacking areas that demand defensive discipline as well as flair.
