Mehdi Dorval delivered another standout performance for Bari in Serie B, providing his sixth assist of the season, but it was not enough to prevent a 3-1 defeat to Cittadella that cost the Apulian side their place in the play-off positions.
Bari travelled to the Stadio Pier Cesare Tombolato with hopes of consolidating their spot in the top seven, aiming to secure a chance at promotion to Serie A.
Their ambitions were briefly kept alive when Dorval created the opening goal midway through the first half.
The 24-year-old French-Algerian full-back, enjoying a breakthrough campaign, seized on a loose ball in the penalty area, deceived a defender with a well-timed feint, and delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Andrea Favilli.
The striker made no mistake from close range, putting Bari ahead in the 31st minute.
Dorval’s latest contribution took his tally to six assists and four goals across 36 league appearances this season, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most consistent and versatile performers in the division.
However, his efforts were ultimately in vain.
Cittadella, who remain embroiled in the relegation fight, responded with urgency and resilience. Despite Bari’s early advantage, the hosts turned the match on its head with three unanswered goals, securing a vital victory in their battle for survival.
The result marked a significant setback for Bari, who slipped out of the play-off zone due to results elsewhere. Cesena’s away win at Cosenza allowed them to leapfrog Bari in the standings, intensifying the competition for the remaining promotion spots.
With only one fixture left in the regular season, Bari now face a daunting task. They will head to Bolzano for a decisive clash against Südtirol, where they will not only need to win but also rely on other results falling in their favour.
Südtirol, featuring Franco-Algerian midfielder Karim Zedadka, will not be an easy opponent, particularly with both sides fighting for critical end-of-season points.
Despite the club’s recent struggles, Dorval’s form remains a silver lining. The defender has consistently impressed with his attacking contributions and tireless work rate, standing out as one of Bari’s most reliable performers in a turbulent campaign.
Bari’s inability to hold their lead against a team battling relegation will undoubtedly raise questions within the camp. What had started as a promising afternoon turned into a bitter disappointment, leaving the club’s promotion hopes hanging by a thread.
The upcoming matchday will be decisive—not only for Bari’s season but also for the future of several key players whose performances have attracted interest from higher divisions.
Until then, the team and supporters must wait and hope for what now seems a slim chance of extending their season into the play-offs.
