Free-agent firepower: five established forwards still weighing their next move

With the summer transfer window for clubs in Europe’s major leagues nearing its close, several experienced strikers remain without clubs and could be signed without a transfer fee.

Martial is another high-profile name on the market. The 30-year-old Frenchman became a free agent after his spell with Monterrey ended.

During his career, Martial has represented AS Monaco, Manchester United, Sevilla and AEK Athens. That experience across several European leagues could make him an attractive option for clubs seeking an established forward without having to pay a transfer fee.

Boadu offers a different profile to the older players on the list. The Netherlands striker is only 25 and is available after his contract with PSV Eindhoven expired.

Injuries have disrupted Boadu’s progress in recent years, but he still possesses the pace, movement and experience required to make an impact. His age also gives potential suitors the possibility of signing a player who could still regain his best form and develop further.

Joselu Mato is among the leading Spanish forwards currently looking for a club. The 36-year-old is searching for a new destination after leaving Al-Gharafa.

The striker’s reputation was strengthened by his decisive contribution during the 2023-24 season with Real Madrid. He played an important role in the club’s run to Champions League success, underlining his ability to provide goals and influence at the highest level despite his age.

The group is completed by Ings, 34, who became a free agent after departing Sheffield United.

The Englishman has a long record in the English game, having played for Liverpool, Southampton, Aston Villa and West Ham. That background could appeal to clubs looking for a forward familiar with the demands of English football and capable of adding experience to their attack without an initial transfer outlay.

With the window close to shutting across Europe’s leading leagues, Icardi, Martial, Boadu, Joselu Mato and Ings remain among the most recognisable attacking players yet to secure their next clubs.
