FRÉDÉRIC GOUNONGBE LINKED WITH MOVE TO DERBY COUNTY
Beninese international Frédéric Gounongbe may soon be plying his trade in England. Following a standout season with KVC Westerlo in the Belgian First Division, the powerful striker has attracted strong interest from Derby County, currently playing in the English Championship (D2).
According to Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws, Derby County are preparing to submit an offer for Gounongbe after Westerlo’s upcoming match against Genk. The 27-year-old forward has made a bright start to the 2015-2016 campaign, netting two goals in his first three league appearances, continuing the form that made him one of Westerlo’s key players last season.
Gounongbe’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, which places pressure on Westerlo to cash in before the end of the summer transfer window or risk losing him on a free transfer. A January move remains a fallback option if a summer deal doesn’t materialize.
A potential move to Derby would mark a significant step in Gounongbe’s career, offering him the chance to test himself in one of Europe’s most competitive second-tier leagues, and possibly pave the way to the Premier League.
