Franz Beckenbauer, known as the “Kaizer,” has accepted the role of ambassador for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Libya. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Tripoli where Beckenbauer attended the laying of the first stone for one of the stadiums to be used in the tournament.
The Libyan Prime Minister, Ali Zeidan, personally invited Beckenbauer to take on the role of ambassador for CAN 2017. Anouer al-Tachani, president of the Libyan Football Federation, confirmed that Beckenbauer had accepted the offer.
Libya had initially been selected to host the 2014 edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), but due to socio-political instability in the country, the tournament was relocated to South Africa. Despite this, Libya went on to win the tournament.
