Franco Mastantuono says move to Fiorentina ‘changed my life’ after Real Madrid struggles
Argentina midfielder Franco Mastantuono says his move to Italy has “changed my life” after a difficult period at Real Madrid, where he remains under contract.
The 19-year-old joined Fiorentina on loan from Real Madrid last summer and has rediscovered his form in Florence. His return to prominence in Serie A has revived the qualities that previously established him as one of South America’s leading young talents.
Mastantuono made the comments after Argentina’s victory over Bolivia, speaking to reporters in the mixed zone. His remarks were reported by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo and appeared to highlight the contrast between the pressure he experienced in Madrid and the greater sense of stability he has found in Italy.
“I feel great since I went to Italy and it changed my life a little,” he said. “I feel very comfortable and have enjoyed it a lot.”
He added: “The change of atmosphere was great for me.”
Mastantuono also expressed his appreciation for Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni, saying he had been given the freedom to play his natural game for the national team.
“Scaloni gives me a lot of freedom to play, and I am grateful for that,” said the midfielder.
The opportunity has allowed Mastantuono to regain confidence with Argentina, but he also spoke openly about the disappointment of being left out of the squad for the most recent World Cup.
“It is difficult not to be called up, but I have always supported my team-mates and Argentina to give their best,” he said. “They put in an amazing performance at the World Cup and made all Argentines proud.”
Despite that setback, Mastantuono believes he is entering a fresh stage of his career and remains focused on contributing to the national side.
“A new stage is beginning,” he said. “I feel good and I may get an opportunity, but above all, I want to work with the national team.”
