Franco-Ivorian defender Mickaël Nadé chooses loyalty over transfer offers to stay at Saint-Étienne

Mickaël Nadé turned down several European offers to remain with AS Saint-Étienne, showing deep loyalty to the club where he built his career.

The Franco-Ivorian defender emerged as one of Les Verts’ standout players despite their relegation to Ligue 2 last season.

The 26-year-old attracted attention from multiple clubs during the summer transfer window, including a firm proposal from Blackburn Rovers worth around €3.5 million.

Yet Nadé rejected all approaches and committed to continue his journey in Forez, where he remains under contract until June 2028.

Speaking to Tribune Verte magazine, Nadé reflected on his decision and the emotional summer he endured. He admitted feeling honoured by the interest shown in him but said his heart belonged to Saint-Étienne.

“I stayed calm throughout the window,” Nadé said. “I had to accept the relegation, but in my mind, it was always clear that I wanted to stay.

It’s flattering to receive offers, but I feel good here. I trained at this club, I know the people, and I have my bearings.”

Nadé, born in Sarcelles, rose through Saint-Étienne’s youth academy before earning a place in the senior team.

His development at the club shaped his strong sense of attachment, which guided his decision to remain even after a difficult season.

He acknowledged that his role within the squad has evolved as he has become one of the team’s more experienced figures.

“My position has changed,” Nadé explained. “I’m now one of the senior players, so I take responsibility for guiding the younger ones and the new arrivals. It’s a mission I’m proud to take on.”

Despite the club’s setback, Nadé remains optimistic about the future. His focus lies on helping Saint-Étienne reclaim its place in France’s top flight.

“We all want to move back up,” he said. “But we can’t lose focus. Ligue 2 is a very demanding league. There are no easy games. We’ll have to fight hard for promotion.”

The defender’s loyalty and leadership have earned admiration from supporters who see him as a symbol of the club’s fighting spirit.

His presence offers stability to a squad still adjusting to life in the second division.
