France international of Cameroonian descent Kylian Mbappe is a major doubt for the upcoming Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Benfica.
The Spanish giants, who are the record holders of the Champions League travels to Portugal for the eighth and final round of the group stage on Wednesday.
As it stands, Real Madrid have not yet secured qualification for the round of 16. Having accumulated 15 points from the initial seven games, the Los Blancos is only one point away from obtaining a direct qualification ticket to the next round.
Mbappe sounded the alarm bell at the training at the Valdebebas on Monday, in preparation for the Champions League match. The pacey forward trained separately alongside Alvaro Carreras, sparking concerns about his availability for the match.
The former Paris Saint Germain attacker has been suffering from a knee injury for two weeks, which kept him out of the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid and forced him to come on as a late substitute in the final against Barcelona, before returning to play again.
Madrid manager, Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to decide on Mbappe’s availability for the Benfica match at a press conference today.
Real Madrid hopes that Mbappe will be ready to play against Benfica, as he represents their primary attacking weapon in various competitions, including the Champions League, scoring 11 goals in the UEFA’s elite club competition this season.
