Franco-Cameroonian midfielder Valentin Atangana joins Al-Ahli SC in €25m move from Stade de Reims
Valentin Atangana has completed a high-profile switch from Stade de Reims to Saudi Arabian champions Al-Ahli SC, signing a three-year contract with the Jeddah-based club.
The 20-year-old defensive midfielder had long been linked with RC Strasbourg but instead opted for what has been described as an “exotic move” to the Middle East.
Al-Ahli confirmed the deal on Saturday, 6 September 2025, with the Franco-Cameroonian talent agreeing terms that will keep him at the club until June 2028.
Rising prospect chooses Saudi challenge
Atangana’s decision to leave Europe at such an early stage in his career has generated considerable discussion. Widely regarded as one of the most promising young midfielders in French football, he has chosen to embark on a new chapter outside of Europe’s traditional football strongholds.
Negotiations with Strasbourg, where he was strongly tipped to move this summer, ultimately broke down, opening the door for Al-Ahli.
The reigning Asian champions presented an attractive sporting project that convinced the player and his representatives.
According to reports, Reims secured a fee in the region of €25 million for the transfer, underlining the value placed on Atangana’s potential.
Development at Reims
Born in France to Cameroonian parents, Atangana rose through the youth ranks at Stade de Reims, quickly distinguishing himself as a midfielder of exceptional promise.
His combination of physical strength, defensive awareness and an ability to dictate play with accurate passing made him a regular feature in the first-team squad after his professional breakthrough in 2022.
By the age of 20, he had already become a recognised figure in Ligue 1, praised for his maturity and tactical discipline.
Reims supporters had hoped to see him develop further in French football, but his departure brings an end to a chapter that many considered only the beginning of a long career in Europe.
New horizons in Jeddah
Al-Ahli SC, one of Saudi Arabia’s most decorated clubs, have made a series of ambitious signings in recent years as part of a broader strategy to strengthen both domestically and in continental competitions.
Atangana’s arrival is expected to provide reinforcement in the heart of midfield, where his energy, pressing ability and composure in possession could play a key role in their title defence.
The move also reflects the growing appeal of Saudi football for young talents who might previously have remained within Europe.
For Atangana, the decision represents both a professional challenge and a chance to establish himself on a different stage while still at the beginning of his career.
A bold career step
Atangana’s transfer underscores a shifting trend in world football, where leagues outside Europe’s traditional elite are attracting players earlier in their development.
While some will question whether leaving Ligue 1 at just 20 could limit his growth, others see the move as a bold and calculated step towards broadening his career experience.
As he settles in Jeddah, Atangana carries with him the expectations of Al-Ahli supporters eager to see their new signing deliver on his potential. For Stade de Reims, the €25 million fee provides significant financial return for a homegrown product, though the club must now look to fill the void left in midfield.
For Atangana himself, the journey is only beginning. His next challenge will be to adapt swiftly to Saudi football and prove that his decision to leave Europe so early can serve as the foundation for long-term success.
