Ribéry Renews Criticism Over 2013 Ballon d’Or Snub
Former France international Franck Ribéry has once again voiced his frustration over finishing third in the 2013 Ballon d’Or, saying the award has become more about politics than performance.
The Bayern Munich midfielder had an exceptional season that year, winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and UEFA Champions League with Bayern, while also playing a key role for France. Yet, despite his accomplishments, he finished behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in the final voting.
“All players should know this: if Ronaldo and Messi are there, a third nominee has no chance,” Ribéry told German outlet AZ. “It’s clear now that even winning the World Cup isn’t enough. Look at Manuel Neuer — for two or three years, he’s been the best goalkeeper in the world, won titles with Bayern, was world champion in Brazil, and still that wasn’t enough. I don’t understand.”
The 41-year-old also questioned the relevance of the ceremony for players not named Messi or Ronaldo.
“If a Bayern player is nominated again, we should ask whether it’s even worth going to the ceremony. What for? A photo opportunity? No, it’s just politics in my opinion,” he added.
Ribéry was not shortlisted for the 2014 edition of the award, which was again won by Ronaldo. His comments echo a long-standing debate over the Ballon d’Or’s voting criteria, with many players and fans questioning whether team achievements are being overlooked in favour of individual fame.
