Francis Ngannou congratulates Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses after Women’s AFCON victory

Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses have been praised by Francis Ngannou after winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Malawi, with the country’s leading mixed martial arts and professional boxing figure telling the team: “Cameroon is proud of you!”

The victory marked Cameroon’s second appearance in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 10 years. Their success was emphatic, as they defeated Malawi without appeal to secure the title.

Ngannou joined Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroon Football Federation, in publicly acknowledging the achievement. Eto’o had already sent a message following the triumph before Ngannou offered his own congratulations through his official social media accounts.

“Champions of Africa. Congratulations to our incredible Indomitable Lionesses!” Ngannou wrote.

“What a tournament from start to finish! Exceptional performances, courage, consistency and determination throughout the competition.”

Ngannou’s message celebrated not only the final result but also the sustained level of performance Cameroon had shown across the tournament. He said the players’ success had been earned during every stage of their campaign.

“You did not just win the trophy, you deserved it at every step! Cameroon is proud of you!” he added.

The comments came after the Cameroon women’s team completed a successful campaign by overcoming Malawi in the final. Their achievement places the Lionesses among the leading figures in the latest edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and represents a significant moment for Cameroon football.

For Ngannou, the triumph was an occasion to recognise the team’s collective effort rather than simply the final victory. His reference to courage, consistency and determination reflected the qualities he believed had defined Cameroon’s performances from the beginning of the competition to the final.

The message also echoed the national pride surrounding the success. By describing the team as “incredible” and highlighting that the trophy had been deserved at every stage, Ngannou underlined the extent of the achievement from his position as one of Cameroon’s most prominent sporting figures.

His public tribute followed the congratulations from Eto’o, ensuring that the Lionesses received recognition from two of the country’s best-known names in sport. The team’s victory over Malawi remains the central achievement, while the messages from Ngannou and the Cameroon Football Federation president added to the celebrations surrounding the title.

Ngannou, a Cameroonian practitioner of mixed martial arts and professional boxing, concluded his post with a direct statement of national support: “Cameroon is proud of you!”
