L’Equipe Reveals “Worst Team” of Ligue 1 Season with Seven Africans Included
L’Equipe’s annual roundup of the “worst team” in Ligue 1 for the season has sparked some discussion, and notably, it features seven African players. These ratings are based on player performances throughout the season, and only those rated at least 19 times by the publication were considered.
Goalkeeper:
Cameroonian Guy Roland Ndy Assembe, who has faced significant challenges at Guingamp this season, is named as the goalkeeper. Despite showing promise early on, Assembe’s performances have been largely underwhelming, with Malian Mamadou Samassa often getting the nod in his place.
Defense:
In defense, the team includes Ghanaian Jonathan Mensah (Evian TG), Burkinabe Steeve Yago (Toulouse), and Senegalese Lamine Ciss (Valenciennes). All three defenders struggled throughout the season, and their performances were below expectations.
Mensah, who has been a regular feature for Evian TG, failed to inspire confidence in the backline, while Yago’s performances at Toulouse left much to be desired. Ciss, similarly, struggled to make an impact at Valenciennes, contributing to his inclusion in the “worst team.”
The inclusion of these players highlights the difficult campaigns many African talents have endured in Ligue 1 this season, with several failing to reach the level expected of them.
