France – League Cup: Diabaté Secures Victory for Bordeaux

Coupe de la Ligue: Marseille Faces Rennes as Round of 16 Action Heats Up

Marseille travel to Rennes tonight in the final fixture of the Coupe de la Ligue round of 16, aiming to bounce back just three days after suffering a defeat that ended their eight-match unbeaten streak. Marcelo Bielsa’s men are eager to regain momentum in the domestic cup.

The round began yesterday with eight matches, producing surprises and dominant wins alike. Bordeaux won the Ligue 1 derby by overcoming Toulouse 3–1, with a key goal from Malian striker Cheick Diabaté. In a notable upset, Reims, led by Togolese goalkeeper Kossi Agassa, were eliminated by Ligue 2 outfit Arles-Avignon after extra time.

There were more shocks as Ligue 2 sides Ajaccio and Créteil claimed away victories over Montpellier and Lens, respectively.

Qualified Teams (Round of 16 Results):

  • Bordeaux beat Toulouse: 3–1

  • Lorient beat Evian TG: 2–1

  • AC Ajaccio (L2) beat Montpellier: 1–0

  • Nantes beat Laval (L2): 4–0

  • Créteil (L2) beat Lens: 2–0

  • Bastia beat Auxerre (L2): 3–1

  • Arles-Avignon (L2) beat Reims: 3–2 (after extra time)

  • Caen beat Clermont (L2): 4–3 (after extra time)

The draw for the next round will take place on November 5, when the six clubs qualified for European competition in 2013–14—PSG, Monaco, Lille, Saint-Étienne, Lyon, and Guingamp—will join the tournament, having been exempt from this stage.
