The Constitutional Council in France has validated the controversial 75% tax on high incomes, including footballers’ salaries, bringing it into force for the years 2013 and 2014. Despite resistance from football club presidents who argued that the tax could weaken their finances and the competitiveness of the French league, the Constitutional Council found the new version of the tax to be “in accordance with the Constitution.” The tax is estimated to cost football clubs around 44 million euros per season, with the exception of Monaco, which will not be required to pay. The decision may lead to reactions from football club leaders and potentially revive the strike they had planned.
