France: Fekir Leaves Door Open to Representing Algeria

Nabil Fekir’s impressive rise continues, and his recent performance with Olympique Lyonnais — contributing to a dominant 3-0 win over LOSC — has only reinforced his value. His subsequent arrival at Clairefontaine for duty with the France Espoirs (U21) marks an important milestone in his young career.

🇫🇷 A Thoughtful Choice for Les Bleuets

Fekir acknowledged the emotional and strategic weight of his decision to respond to France’s call-up, especially amid strong interest from Algeria:

“I am proud to honor this first call-up… I will do everything to repay the trust.”

He emphasized that the decision followed extensive discussions with his family and advisors, underscoring the difficulty of choosing between two national allegiances. Though committed to France’s U21s for now, Fekir remains eligible for Algeria until he features for France’s senior team in an official match.

🔄 Door Still Open for Algeria?

Yes. Because he hasn’t yet played an official competitive match with France’s senior team, FIFA rules still allow him to make a one-time switch to Algeria, should he choose to later on.

“For the moment I am in the Espoirs, I am living in the present moment and we will see later,” Fekir explained, clearly leaving the door ajar.

🇪🇺 Euro 2015 Playoff Focus

Fekir is now preparing under coach Pierre Mankowski for a crucial Euro 2015 U21 play-off against Sweden, with:

  • First leg: October 10 in Le Mans

  • Return leg: October 14 in Sweden
