France defeats Egypt 3-1 to secure final spot in Men’s Olympic football

Egypt’s hopes of securing a historic Olympic gold for Africa were dashed as they faced a formidable French side, captained by Alexandre Lacazette. Despite a strong performance from the young Pharaohs, led by Zizo, the match proved to be a challenging affair.

The game began with France asserting their dominance through technical prowess, yet the first half concluded with a goalless stalemate.

The French team created several opportunities but were unable to break the deadlock before the interval.

The breakthrough came in the second half when Egypt took the lead against the run of play. In the 60th minute, Mahmoud Saber capitalized on a well-orchestrated attack from the right flank.

Despite an initial weak shot that was blocked, Saber showcased resilience and skill, dribbling past French defenders before delivering a powerful strike that found the back of the net.

France responded promptly, with Jean-Philippe Mateta leveling the score in the 83rd minute.

The equalizer forced the match into extra time, where the French team demonstrated their depth and composure.

In the extra period, France asserted their control, scoring twice to secure a 3-1 victory. The goals ensured their progression to the final, where they will face Spain.

For Egypt, the loss marked the end of their impressive run in the tournament.

Having emerged as Africa’s last hope following Morocco’s earlier elimination, the Pharaohs’ campaign came to a close in the semi-finals, a significant achievement nonetheless.

The final will see France and Spain battle for the gold medal, while Egypt’s journey in the 2024 Olympics, though ending in the semi-finals, will be remembered as a notable chapter in their footballing history.
