CAF approves four stadiums in Egypt

Egypt has received a significant infrastructure boost after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) officially approved four additional stadiums in the country for hosting international matches, reinforcing Egypt’s growing status as one of the continent’s key football hubs.

The approval comes as part of a wider strategy by the Egyptian Football Association to expand the number of venues that meet CAF’s stringent licensing requirements, with the process overseen by Mohamed El-Tobgy, Director of the Licensing Department.

According to official confirmation, the newly approved venues include Alexandria Stadium, which has been classified as a Category 3 stadium, the Right to Dream Stadium, which received Category 2 approval, 30 June Stadium (Secondary Stadium No. 1) under Category 1, and Borg El Arab Stadium, which has also been confirmed as a Category 3 venue following its latest inspection and compliance upgrades.

The classification system introduced by CAF is based on strict technical, safety, and infrastructural standards, with Category 3 representing the highest level of accreditation. Stadiums in this category are eligible to host senior national team fixtures as well as high-profile continental and international club competitions.

Category 1 and Category 2 venues, while also meeting CAF requirements, are primarily designated for developmental competitions such as women’s football tournaments, youth and age-group championships, and selected regional fixtures. These categories are essential in supporting the broader growth structure of African football, ensuring appropriate venues are available for all levels of competition.

The inclusion of Alexandria Stadium and Borg El Arab Stadium in the upgraded list further strengthens Egypt’s already impressive hosting portfolio, both venues having previously played major roles in international tournaments and continental club competitions. Their continued certification reflects ongoing investment in maintenance and compliance with evolving CAF standards.

Meanwhile, the approval of 30 June Stadium and the Right to Dream Stadium highlights Egypt’s expanding commitment to modern football infrastructure, with newer and upgraded facilities increasingly integrated into the national hosting framework.

This development is expected to enhance Egypt’s ability to stage major tournaments, reduce pressure on traditional venues, and provide more flexibility for scheduling domestic and international fixtures.

With CAF continuing to tighten requirements for stadium certification across the continent, Egypt’s successful approval of four venues signals both compliance and ambition—positioning the country as a leading destination for African and international football events in the years ahead.
