Formose Mendy: “Senegal must go to Morocco to win AFCON 2025”
Senegalese defender Formose Mendy remains fully committed to the Lions despite nearly a year away from the national team.
The 24-year-old joined Watford on loan from Lorient this summer and aims to regain the form that earned him ten international caps.
Mendy is focused on impressing coach Pape Thiaw while staying a strong supporter of Senegal’s AFCON 2025 campaign in Morocco.
“Nothing special is happening. To be called up, you have to perform on the pitch. It’s up to me to do the job,” Mendy told Afrik-Foot, published by Senego.
He expressed understanding of the coaching staff’s decisions, adding: “I wish the current players all the best and congratulate them for qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.”
Even in absence, Mendy keeps his focus on Senegal’s success. “I am a son of the country. Every Senegalese dreams of going to the AFCON.
I remain a supporter of the Lions,” he said. His loyalty highlights his commitment to the team’s continental ambitions.
Senegal enters AFCON 2025 as one of the favorites, and Mendy embraces that pressure. “If everyone tells you you’re a favorite, then you are! We must go to Morocco to win this AFCON, not just participate. The goal is to bring the trophy back home,” he declared confidently.
Mendy draws strength from his previous international experience, including the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
“I learned a lot, even with limited playing time. I pray all Senegalese players stay healthy so we can win this continental title,” he added.
The former Red Star defender remains patient about his national team prospects. He continues to work hard at Watford, aiming to rediscover peak form and earn a spot in Senegal’s competitive defensive line. Mendy’s determination signals his readiness to contribute once called upon.
His focus now is clear: personal form, team success, and a strong campaign for Senegal in Morocco.
Mendy insists that consistent effort at Watford will pave the way for his return and further national team achievements.
