Mamdouh Abbas has shaken up Egyptian football with a bold claim about the rescheduled Egyptian Cup final.
The former Zamalek president announced that the highly anticipated clash between Zamalek and Pyramids will no longer happen on 20 May.
Abbas took to his personal X account to make the statement: “The Egyptian Football Federation has not received any invitations to host the Egyptian Cup final, whether in the United Arab Emirates or Saudi Arabia, and therefore the match will be held on 5 June at the Cairo Stadium, and this is for information.”
His remarks confirm growing speculation about a change in plans. The Egyptian Football Federation later confirmed the final will be played on 5 June at Cairo Stadium, aligning with Abbas’ revelation.
This decision follows Pyramids’ historic qualification for the CAF Champions League final, where they face South Africa’s Sundowns on 24 May. To avoid scheduling conflicts, the Cup final date was moved.
Abbas’ announcement caught many off guard, especially given its delivery through an unexpected platform.
