Former Togo star Emmanuel Adebayor breaks ranks with Mourinho over Vinicius Jnr’s racism comments

Former Arsenal F.C. striker Emmanuel Adebayor has publicly distanced himself from Jose Mourinho following the Portuguese tactician’s recent remarks concerning the alleged racist abuse directed at Vinicius Junior.

The former Togolese star, who worked under Mourinho during their time together at Real Madrid, made it clear that he strongly disagrees with his former manager’s position on the matter. Speaking in an interview with beIN Sports, the former Togo international stressed that racism must never be tolerated in football or society.

“I think Mourinho was wrong, and for the first time, I’ll never agree with Mourinho on this. There is no place for racism in football, sports and in everyday life.

“If you’re not allowed to go by the corner flag and dance, then there is no point because these are the things that bring joy to footballers.”

Adebayor’s comments come amid ongoing debates surrounding how players express themselves on the pitch and the reactions such celebrations sometimes provoke. Vinicius Júnior has repeatedly been at the centre of racist incidents in Spain, sparking widespread condemnation and renewed calls for stronger action against discrimination.

By openly challenging Mourinho’s viewpoint, Adebayor has added his voice to the growing number of football figures advocating for zero tolerance toward racism. His stance reinforces the broader message that passion, personality and celebration are integral parts of the game — and should never be used as justification for abuse.
