Former Super Eagles defender Godwin Okpara has voiced optimism about Nigeria’s chances of securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a rocky start in the qualifiers.

The three-time African champions currently sit fifth in Group C with just three points from four matches, leaving them in a must-win situation for their upcoming games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.

Speaking to Nigeria-based Brila Media, the former PSG defender, who earned 18 caps for Nigeria, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to turn things around.

“One-on-one, Nigeria has better players than the teams in our World Cup group, and I’m confident we will qualify for the tournament next year,” he said.

The former Standard Liege defender emphasized the quality within the squad, believing it will be enough to overcome the challenges ahead.

Nigeria’s next matches are crucial to reviving their World Cup hopes.

They will face group leaders Rwanda on March 21, 2025, at Kigali’s Amahoro Stadium, followed by a home game against bottom-placed Zimbabwe on March 25, 2025, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

These fixtures will also mark the debut of newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle, who previously led Mali’s national team with some notable success.

Chelle’s appointment has sparked hope among fans, as he aims to replicate his achievements and steer the Super Eagles back on track.

With the World Cup dream hanging in the balance, Nigeria’s upcoming matches are pivotal.

The team must deliver strong performances to keep their qualification hopes alive and prove their mettle on the continental stage.
