Former Nigerian international Adegoke Adelabu criticizes Nigerian Football Federation’s coaching choice

Adegoke Adelabu has raised concerns regarding the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and its approach to selecting the next coach for the Super Eagles. Speaking candidly about the issue, the former international player suggested that the NFF lacks objectivity in its decision-making process, emphasizing the need for clear objectives and government oversight.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Adelabu highlighted the NFF’s urgency for results, indicating that this pressure could influence the choice of coach.

While many Nigerians advocate for a native coach to lead the national team, Adelabu hinted that the federation might prioritize experience over nationality in its selection.

“The NFF desperately needs results. She might be tempted to look for a more experienced coach for the Super Eagles. I don’t rule out the possibility of naming one of the two guys (Finidi George or Emmanuel Amunike). However, it all depends on the objective of the NFF at the moment,” Adelabu remarked.

Furthermore, Adelabu criticized the Nigerian government’s lack of involvement in sports matters, suggesting that clearer directives from the Ministry of Sports could prevent missteps by the NFF.

He emphasized the importance of defining strategic goals to ensure the success and development of Nigerian football.

“The future of our football may not be their priority. You and I know they will prefer a foreign coach for several reasons. Furthermore, the government is completely in the dark about the future of sports in the country.

So no one can force the NFF to hire an indigenous coach because the premises don’t seem relevant. Since we don’t even know what we want, how can we know how to get it?” Adelabu expressed.

Adelabu’s remarks underscore the complexities surrounding the selection of the next Super Eagles coach and highlight broader issues within Nigerian football governance.

As stakeholders deliberate on the best path forward, Adelabu’s insights serve as a reminder of the importance of transparency, accountability, and strategic planning in shaping the future of Nigerian football.
