The football community is mourning the tragic loss of former Moroccan international Abdelaziz Barrada, who passed away at the age of 35. The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) confirmed that the ex-midfielder succumbed to a heart attack, sending shockwaves through the sporting world.
Born in Provins, near Paris, Barrada’s career began in the youth ranks of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Although he never broke into the first team at the French giants, his talent was undeniable.
He opted to represent Morocco internationally at a young age, going on to feature prominently in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Barrada’s breakthrough came during his time at Getafe in Spain, where his creativity and technique, particularly with his right foot, earned him recognition.
He later ventured to Al-Jazira in the UAE, but it was his return to European football with Olympique de Marseille that many hoped would cement his place among football’s elite.
His move to Marseille, under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa, was seen as a significant step in his career.
However, despite moments of promise, Barrada’s two seasons at the club between 2014 and 2016 did not live up to expectations. Over 45 appearances, he managed just three goals and nine assists, falling short of the high hopes placed on him by both fans and management.
His international career also faltered, with his final appearance for Morocco coming in 2015, leaving him with 28 caps and four goals.
Following his time at Marseille, Barrada’s career took him to several clubs around the world. He played for Al Nasr Dubai, Antalyaspor in Turkey, Gimnàstic de Tarragona in Spain, and Al-Shahania in Qatar.
His final stint came in the French fourth division with US Lusitanos Saint-Maur before he retired from professional football.
After hanging up his boots, Barrada transitioned into a role as a football pundit, working as a consultant for beIN Sports in France, notably covering the last AFCON tournament.
The news of his sudden passing has deeply saddened his former teammates, coaches, and fans alike.
The editorial staff of Afrik-Foot extends its heartfelt condolences to Barrada’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
His contribution to both club and country will be remembered fondly by those who witnessed his talent on the field.
