Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Derrick Spencer has thrown his weight behind coach Nasreddine Nabi despite the teams inconsistent performance this season.
Kaizer Chiefs are currently out of the championship race but on the other, the team is close to ending their trophy drought in South Africa after reaching the semifinals of the Cup competition, defeating giants Mamelodi Sundowns.
And Derrick Spencer believes the team has a promising future under coach Nasreddine Nabi, considering his performance in the first season.
Spencer admitted that the first season in South African football for the Tunisian was about adaptation, and the squad was not fully cohesive. Therefore, it would be wise to give Nabi another season before making any judgments about his competence.
“It’s been up and down. It’s not what we expected, but given the pressure of past years when we couldn’t achieve anything, it’s not easy to come into a big team. Half of our team consists of new players, so finding combinations and dealing with many injuries wasn’t easy. But hopefully, he has adapted to the South African style and culture and knows what Chiefs are about.
Next season, he will have no excuses. I think it would be unfair to say he has failed or that he should leave (now). He needs time because we have a lot of new players in the team. I think we should give him another season, and then we’ll see. We reached the final, so that’s good for the team,” Spencer stated.
