Kobbie Mainoo’s meteoric rise at Manchester United has drawn admiration from many, including his former junior coach, Ian Kelly, who harbors a tinge of regret over Mainoo’s decision to opt for Old Trafford over the Etihad Stadium.

Ian Kelly, who mentored the now 18-year-old Mainoo before his move to Manchester United, expressed immense pride in his former protege’s accomplishments. However, Kelly, a fervent supporter of Manchester City, revealed his wistfulness over Mainoo’s choice of joining United.

Reflecting on Mainoo’s early training days, Kelly revealed, “When he was with us, he was training at the City academy as well as at United, starting when he was about seven. By the time he turned nine, the time had come to sign on with one of them, and he had to make a choice — it turned out to be Old Trafford.”

Despite his allegiance to Manchester City, Kelly acknowledged Mainoo’s commendable progress at United, albeit with a hint of contemplation about what could have been if Mainoo had opted differently. “Good for him, too, even if I wish he was at the Etihad,” Kelly added.

Kelly reminisced about Mainoo’s standout qualities, citing his recent performance against Everton as a testament to his exceptional talent. Reflecting on the hypothetical scenario of Mainoo under Pep Guardiola’s tutelage, Kelly couldn’t help but ponder the untapped potential.

The fond memories shared between Kelly and Mainoo during their time at Failsworth Dynamos still resonate. Mainoo’s message of gratitude following his FA Youth Cup triumph last year reaffirmed his appreciation for his formative years, showcasing the humility and character that defined him.

Recalling Mainoo’s competitive spirit, Kelly shared an anecdote about the young talent’s occasional reluctance to be substituted during matches, emphasizing Mainoo’s drive and hunger for the game.

As Mainoo’s trajectory continues to ascend at Manchester United, Kelly’s sentiments encapsulate a mix of pride in his protege’s success and contemplation over the divergent paths that could have unfolded under different circumstances.
