Former Ghanaian international Matthew Amoah has advised Antoine Semenyo to reject a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur, questioning the logic behind such a transfer.
The Bournemouth forward has been linked with a switch to North London, with reports suggesting Spurs are preparing a €40 million (£33.5 million) bid for his services.
Semenyo, 25, has been in fine form this season, scoring nine goals and providing five assists in 31 appearances across all competitions.
His performances have drawn interest from several top clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Serie A side Napoli.
However, Amoah believes a move to Tottenham would be a step in the wrong direction.
“It makes no footballing sense”
Amoah, who earned 45 caps for Ghana between 2002 and 2011, expressed doubts about Tottenham as the right destination for Semenyo at this stage of his career.
“With all due respect to Tottenham, if this is the only offer for Semenyo this summer, then he should stay at Bournemouth,” Amoah said.
The former Vitesse Arnhem striker further argued that Bournemouth currently appear to be in a more stable position than Spurs, with manager Andoni Iraola implementing an effective system that has allowed Semenyo to thrive.
“Bournemouth are playing better football than Tottenham at the moment and seem more stable under a very good manager. Moving to a club that is still trying to find its footing would be a demotion that makes no footballing sense,” he added.
Semenyo’s market value and long-term contract
Semenyo joined Bournemouth in January 2023 from Bristol City for a reported fee of €12 million (£10 million).
His current contract runs until 2029, giving the Cherries significant leverage in negotiations.
Amoah believes the rumoured €40 million valuation is below Semenyo’s worth in the current market, considering his contract length, age, and form.
“He is playing very well at a club that values him, and the fans adore him. Unless a much bigger club comes in with a better offer, he should remain at Bournemouth. Plus, €40 million is undervaluing him given the current transfer market conditions,” Amoah stated.
Interest from other clubs
Beyond Tottenham, reports suggest that Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle have also been monitoring Semenyo’s progress.
Napoli, currently in search of attacking reinforcements, has also been linked with the Ghanaian international.
As Bournemouth prepare for their next Premier League fixture against Brentford, speculation around Semenyo’s future continues to grow.
However, for now, the forward remains focused on maintaining his fine form and helping his club secure a strong finish to the season.
