Former Ghana head coach Chris Hughton has reportedly become the frontrunner for the Zimbabwe national team coaching role, following the dismissal of Michael Nees over poor results.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) opened applications for the position earlier this week, drawing significant global interest with more than 300 coaches reportedly submitting their credentials as revealed by AfricaSoccer.com.

Despite competition from high-profile names such as Stuart Baxter, Pitso Mosimane, and Kaitano Tembo, Hughton is said to be leading the race for the job.

The 65-year-old manager, who previously handled Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest, has been out of work since parting ways with Ghana in January 2024.

ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi confirmed that the selection process is nearing completion.

“The process of appointing a coach is at an advanced stage.

“I think by Monday or Tuesday next week, we should be in a position to make an announcement.”

The Warriors are scheduled to face Algeria in Saudi Arabia on November 13, before hosting Qatar four days later.

The two matches form part of their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to kick off in December.
