Former Egypt star Tarek Yehia names Belgium among 2026 World Cup final contenders
Former Egyptian football star Tarek Yehia has named Belgium among candidates to reach the final of the upcoming 2026 World Cup tournament in North America.
The global showpiece, to be co-hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico has been scheduled to kick start next month, with 48 nations expected to battle it out for the covetous trophy.
The Pharaohs are paired in Group G against Belgium, New Zealand and Iran. The African giants will open their account against the Belgium on June 15, 2026.
“Every team we face in the World Cup should have a somewhat different approach,” he said, highlighting the importance of tactical flexibility as Egypt prepares for the global tournament.
The former international also noted that Egypt’s opening group matches will demand a cautious and disciplined strategy, especially given the strength of opponents like Belgium, who are widely regarded as contenders to reach the latter stages of the competition.
“Belgium is a strong team with very big names and is among the candidates to reach the final stages. Certainly, there will be some caution from Hossam Hassan and there will be a very strong defensive balance so that at least he can get the first point in the group stage,” he added.
