Former Egypt coach Javier Aguirre appointed Valencia manager

Valencia have appointed former Egypt national team coach Javier Aguirre as the new manager of their first team following the departure of Carlos Corberan.

Corberan was dismissed after a disappointing start to the 2026/27 La Liga campaign, with Valencia struggling to pick up results after the opening seven rounds.

Valencia currently sit second from bottom of the Spanish top flight with four points, having recorded just one victory and one draw while suffering five defeats.

The club have now turned to experienced Mexican coach Aguirre, who has agreed a contract until the end of the current season, with an option to extend the deal for another year.

Aguirre arrives with extensive experience of Spanish football, having previously managed several clubs in La Liga, including Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad and Real Mallorca.

The Mexican tactician is regarded as one of the most experienced coaches in Spanish football and will be tasked with helping Valencia improve their fortunes and climb away from the relegation zone.

His appointment also marks a return to club football in Spain after his recent work with the Mexican national team.

Aguirre previously managed Egypt in 2018, taking over from Argentine coach Hector Cuper. His time with the Pharaohs ended after the team suffered elimination in the round of 16 at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite his departure from Egypt, Aguirre continued to build his reputation at international level and returned to lead Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He guided Mexico to the quarter-finals of the tournament, where they were narrowly beaten by England, bringing an end to their impressive campaign.

Aguirre will now turn his attention to the challenge at Valencia, where his immediate priority will be to stabilise the team following their difficult start to the La Liga season.

With Valencia currently sitting near the bottom of the table, the experienced Mexican coach faces the task of quickly improving results while restoring confidence within the squad.

His familiarity with Spanish football could prove valuable as he begins his latest challenge in La Liga, where he has already managed several clubs during his long coaching career.
