Former Dutch star Rafael van der Vaart wants Mohammed Salah and Liverpool to part ways

Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has suggested that a summer departure could suit both Mohamed Salah and Liverpool.

Salah, who remains under contract at Liverpool until 2027, has experienced a dip in form this season, registering seven goals and eight assists so far. Notably, the Egyptian forward has not scored from open play in the Premier League since November 1, a stark contrast to last season when he delivered an impressive 34 goals and 23 assists across competitions.

Speaking to Liverpool.com, Van der Vaart pointed to what he believes is a natural decline in physical sharpness. “When I look at Mohamed Salah and his position on the field, I notice that he has lost that extra speed, and it has declined as he has gotten older,” he said. “He used to have great pace and would run directly at players, but things look different now, and that’s due to his advancing age.”

The Dutchman compared Salah’s situation to that of defenders, arguing that age can affect positions differently. He referenced Virgil van Dijk as an example, noting that while the Dutch centre-back faced criticism after a few poor performances, he ultimately proved his quality over the course of a full season.

Van der Vaart also highlighted the challenges that come with managing high-profile players. “Having a big player and a big name can sometimes be a problem for both the player and the coach,” he explained. “If you expect certain things from him and he doesn’t deliver, you should be able to bench him. But because he is Salah, it becomes a major issue and you’re asked about him at every press conference.”

He concluded by suggesting that a fresh start might benefit all involved. “It might be better for both parties if Salah moves to another club in the summer.”
