Former Benin star criticizes Morocco’s football standing: “cannot be called a great team”

Michael Pote

Former Benin national team star, Michael Poté, emphasized that the Moroccan national football team cannot be dubbed a “great team” as they haven’t secured any notable titles.

The ex-Nice player stated, “I am not surprised by Morocco’s elimination.

Perhaps I will have enemies for saying this, but can you explain to me how a team can be labeled as great? What has Morocco won?”

Poté, who appeared as a guest on the “After Foot” program broadcast on the French network “RMC,” continued, “Why do we consider a team great? Moroccans can say what they want…

They reached the World Cup semi-finals, which was a surprise, but they haven’t won the Africa Cup.”

It’s worth noting that the Moroccan national team’s first and only continental title dates back to 1976, while Algeria, the current Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions, secured their latest title in 2019.

This victory marked Algeria’s second AFCON triumph, with their previous win in 1990, coupled with a runner-up finish in 1980.
