Former Barcelona star Pedro Rodriguez announces retirement from football

Former Barcelona and Spain forward Pedro Rodriguez has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 39, saying he is ready to begin “a new stage” in his life.

Pedro shared the news on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, in an emotional message published on his social media accounts. He reflected on his career and thanked the clubs, supporters and team-mates who had accompanied him throughout his time in the game.

“I feel this is the moment. The moment to take a step forward and begin a new stage in my life,” Pedro wrote on X.

“I leave proud to have lived my dream and grateful to all the people who stood by me and helped make it a reality. Thank you, football, for making me so happy.”

Pedro retires as one of the most important figures in Spanish football, having enjoyed the finest period of his career at Barcelona.

He progressed through the club’s ranks before making his first-team breakthrough under manager Pep Guardiola. During his time at Camp Nou, he helped Barcelona win the historic treble and the sextuple.

His achievements with the club formed a central part of an outstanding career, while his success with Spain established him as one of the leading players of the country’s golden generation.

Pedro played a role in Spain’s triumph at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and their European Championship victory in 2012. Those honours placed him among the players to have won all of the major trophies available in the game.

After leaving Barcelona, Pedro continued his career in the Premier League with Chelsea, where he made a significant impact. He later moved to Italy and played in Serie A for Lazio.

In his retirement message, Pedro looked back on his journey with pride and credited those around him for helping him fulfil his ambitions in football.
