Former Al Ahly defender Ahmed El-Sayed believes Zamalek are laying strong foundations for a return to glory.
Speaking on radio, he praised the club’s efforts to rebuild with a younger generation capable of challenging for titles.
“John Edward, Zamalek’s sporting director, is building a new generation. Every so often, the big clubs change their skin in order to return to their former glory, and Zamalek is making good progress at the moment,” he said.
El-Sayed acknowledged that while Zamalek may not immediately match the strength of Al Ahly or Pyramids FC, the long-term vision is promising. “It will be difficult for the Whites to win more than one championship next season,” he added, “but the team being built could dominate for the next 10 years.”
He also spoke about striker Wessam Abu Ali, who is nearing a move to MLS side Columbus Crew. “Al-Ahly handled Wessam’s case professionally,” he said, noting the club must now search for a new striker with similar qualities.
El-Sayed praised Abu Ali as a complete forward Al Ahly has lacked for years.
