Azam FC has made history in Tanzanian football by claiming the top spot in the 1st division football rankings, shaking up the traditional hierarchy dominated by Simba SC and Young Africans since 1989. Founded in 2007, Azam entered the Premier League in the 2008/2009 season and steadily climbed the ranks, finishing third twice and second twice before securing the championship title this season. Their unbeaten run throughout the year, with 18 wins and 8 draws, solidified their dominance in the league.
The success of Azam can be attributed in part to their backing by the Bakhresa Group, a conglomerate with extensive industrial and commercial activities across Central and Eastern Africa. Additionally, the club’s Cameroonian coach, Joseph Marius Omog, played a pivotal role. Omog, who took over mid-season in November 2013, brought a wealth of experience from his time with AC Léopards de Dolisie and the Cameroon national team.
With their impressive performance, Azam FC will represent Tanzania in the Orange Champions League next year, signaling to their opponents that they should not be underestimated.
