Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar scores again despite Al-Ittihad defeat
Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar continued his outstanding end to the season by scoring once again for Al-Ittihad, although his side suffered a 3-2 defeat against Al-Shabab in the Saudi Pro League on Sunday evening.
The rescheduled match from the 28th round of the championship produced an entertaining contest in Riyadh, with Aouar once again standing out through his attacking contribution despite the disappointing result for his team.
Al-Shabab took control of the game shortly after half-time when Ali Al-Bulaihi opened the scoring before Haroune Camara doubled the advantage moments later to leave Al-Ittihad facing a difficult challenge.
Trailing by two goals, Al-Ittihad attempted to respond and found inspiration through Aouar, who remained influential throughout the encounter.
The Algerian international reduced the deficit in the 67th minute after reacting intelligently inside the penalty area during a corner situation.
His finish brought Al-Ittihad back into the contest and marked his 15th goal in all competitions this season.
That tally now represents the best scoring return of Aouar’s professional career.
The former Olympique Lyonnais academy product had never previously reached such attacking numbers since beginning his senior career, making this campaign a particularly significant one statistically for the midfielder.
Despite Aouar’s efforts, Al-Shabab eventually restored their advantage through Yannick Carrasco late in the match before Danilo Pereira scored in added time to narrow the deficit once again.
Al-Ittihad were ultimately unable to avoid defeat, but Aouar’s latest performance continued to underline his strong individual form during the closing stages of the season.
The midfielder’s consistency is also likely to be viewed positively by Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic ahead of the next international gathering and preparations linked to the 2026 World Cup.
With his confidence growing and his attacking numbers reaching new heights, Aouar is increasingly positioning himself as one of the key players to watch for the Algerian national team in the months ahead.
