In a historic moment, South Sudan is set to participate in continental competitions organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the first time. The announcement was made on the CAF website, signifying a significant milestone for the nation.
Despite being an independent state for only two years, South Sudan’s entry into CAF in February 2012 as the 54th member country and subsequent affiliation with FIFA in May of the same year (as the 209th member) reflects the nation’s commitment to integration into the international sporting community.
South Sudan’s debut in CAF inter-club competitions is marked by the inclusion of two clubs, Atlabara FC, crowned champions before the end of the season, and Malakia FC, winners of the National Cup. Atlabara FC will participate in the Champions League, while Malakia FC will compete in the Confederation Cup.
This momentous step in football follows South Sudan’s plans to enter FIBA-Africa basketball competitions starting the next year, showcasing the nation’s determination to make its mark in various sports on the continental stage.
