Beninese Government Appoints Normalization Committee After Suspension of Football Federation
Beninese football is entering a new phase of governance, as the government has decided to appoint a normalization committee to oversee the sport. Minister of Sports Safiou Idrissou Affo made the announcement in a press conference, detailing that the committee will have “well-defined specifications” and will be tasked with “establishing commissions for a new start for Beninese football.”
The government’s decision to withdraw the accreditation of the Beninese Football Federation (FBF) has sparked controversy, with some officials within the FBF viewing the move as political interference. However, Minister Affo firmly denied this, clarifying that the decision was made due to “poor management of football” and not influenced by politics.
Affo also confirmed that an audit of the FBF’s assets would be conducted as part of the broader process of reform. In addition to the committee’s formation, the minister announced that both the national Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 championships would be suspended “until further notice” due to “security reasons” arising from the current tensions.
The situation remains delicate, and FIFA has yet to comment on the matter, leaving the future of Beninese football in uncertain hands.
