On Sunday, Sporting Anderlecht will host Genk for the 28th round of the Jupiler Pro League, with the third-placed team facing off against the sixth-placed team. This encounter holds significant importance for both sides, as they have faced difficulties in recent weeks.
Struggling to find consistent form, Anderlecht aims to rejuvenate their progress after a challenging period. Cheikhou Kouyaté, the Senegalese international defender, acknowledged the team’s fragility this season, attributing it to the pressure they face.
“We’ve been a fragile group this season. Even a minor setback, like our defeat in Mechelen in January, plunges us into doubt. Despite this, we closed the gap to within four points of Standard in December. We’re under too much pressure. We’re so eager to perform well that we often overextend ourselves, losing our composure in the process,” Kouyaté confessed in comments relayed by lavenir.net.
Kouyaté hopes that the match against Genk will serve as a wake-up call for Anderlecht. “To avoid issues against Genk, we need to give our all from the outset and rally the support of the fans. This is crucial. Against Mons, we faced jeers after just five minutes, which made it challenging. I’ve received numerous messages from supporters in recent weeks, and very few have been positive. I understand their frustration. We’ll make every effort to bounce back. Our objective is to secure a perfect 9 out of 9 against Genk, OHL, and Ostend, while hoping that Bruges and Standard face setbacks before the playoffs,” Kouyaté emphasized.
