Bayer Leverkusen hold firm on Ibrahim Maza amid Atlético interest

Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly turned down a €35 million bid from Atlético Madrid for 21-year-old Algerian midfielder Ibrahim Maza, with the Bundesliga side demanding at least €45 million for the player.

Maza, who joined Leverkusen from Hertha Berlin for around €12 million, has impressed in his first season in the Bundesliga.

Playing primarily as a deep-lying playmaker, the 21-year-old has contributed two goals and three assists in 19 league appearances, while featuring in 33 matches across all competitions, including the Champions League, where he has scored two goals and provided two assists.

Atlético Madrid’s interest in Maza is linked to uncertainties in their attacking lineup, with Antoine Griezmann reportedly set to leave for MLS and the future of Julián Álvarez still unclear.

The Spanish club had been tracking Maza since his time at Hertha Berlin and were reportedly drawn to his versatility, technical ability, and vision on the field.

The young midfielder also caught attention during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further boosting his reputation as one of the most promising talents in European football.

Despite the Spanish club’s offer, Leverkusen appear determined to hold onto Maza, who is under contract until 2030.

According to reports, the player himself is in no rush to leave Germany, partly because the upcoming World Cup could further increase his value if he performs well with the Algerian national team, the Fennecs.

Leverkusen’s stance underscores their belief in Maza’s potential and their unwillingness to sell him for a figure below their valuation, keeping the young midfielder in the Bundesliga for at least another season.
