Angola has appointed Romeu Catato Filemon as their new coach, filling the position left vacant since the departure of Gustavo Ferrin five months ago after the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Catato Filemon will lead the team for the next two years.
The new coach has been tasked with three main objectives, according to reports from Angola Foot. Firstly, he aims to guide the Palancas Negras to qualification for the upcoming 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Morocco. Secondly, he will focus on securing qualification for the local selection for the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda. Lastly, Catato Filemon’s mandate includes qualifying the Angolan national team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, with a test match against Mozambique scheduled for March 5.
Catato Filemon is familiar with Angolan football, having previously served as the national coordinator of women’s football and as the coach of the Angolan U20 team from 2007 to 2009. He achieved success with Athlético de Namibé, winning the Angola Cup in 2005.
