Bayer Leverkusen hopeful Ibrahim Maza will be fit after thigh scare
Bayer Leverkusen head coach Kasper Hjulmand says he is hopeful Ibrahim Maza will be fit for selection after the midfielder was forced off with a thigh problem in midweek.
The 20-year-old Algerian international left the field in the 56th minute of Leverkusen’s Champions League meeting with Olympiacos FC after experiencing discomfort.
The coaching staff opted to replace him as a precaution, raising concerns over his short-term availability.
Speaking before Saturday’s Bundesliga encounter with FSV Mainz 05, Hjulmand delivered a measured but positive assessment. “We are hopeful that Maza will be available,” he told the press.
The update is likely to provide reassurance not only within Leverkusen’s camp but also to Algeria’s national team staff.
Maza is expected to play a key role during the upcoming international training camp, which features friendly matches against Guatemala and Uruguay.
Leverkusen also face crucial European fixtures against Arsenal FC, with the first leg scheduled for 11 March and the return match set to take place in London a week later.
Maza’s availability would be a significant boost as the German side prepare for those encounters.
Since the beginning of the season, the midfielder has made 29 appearances in all competitions. He has scored four goals and registered four assists, underlining his growing influence within the squad.
His development has been closely watched both at club and international level, where he is regarded as an increasingly important figure.
While further medical assessment will determine the final decision, the early signs suggest the injury may not keep him sidelined for long.
