One year before the conclusion of his term as president of the Togolese Football Federation (FTF), Gabriel Ameyi finds himself facing challenges to his position. Within a 24-hour period on October 18, FIFA sent a letter requesting an assessment of the disbursements of funds for Togolese football development. Simultaneously, FIFA announced a visit by its emissaries in the coming weeks. However, this visit took place without Améyi’s knowledge.
Jerome Valcke, FIFA’s General Secretary, along with Thierry Regenass and Federico Addiechi, arrived in Lomé, Togo, without informing Gabriel Améyi. Their visit was initially reported to be related to security for the Pharaons-Black Stars match on November 19. After meeting with financial and sports decision-makers and speaking with Togolese head of state Faure Gnassingbé, Valcke left without meeting Améyi.
Améyi later rushed to the hotel where the FIFA representatives were staying, but their meeting lasted only five minutes. Valcke mentioned the importance of political support for successful reforms in Togolese football. This development signals a strained relationship between Améyi and FIFA.
Améyi has faced criticism for his management of the federation, with accusations of cavalier financial practices. His refusal to provide justifications for a significant portion of the funds allocated by FIFA and non-compliance with football development plans contributed to his strained relations with the international body. FIFA, according to reports, may establish an interim committee with a potential duration of two years.
