Claude Le Roy, who took on the role of coach for the Red Devils of Congo on December 5, sheds light on his decision and objectives in a recent interview with Jeune Afrique. Referred to as the “white wizard” and sought after by various African selections, Le Roy emphasizes that his choice to lead Congo is purely driven by sporting considerations.
Following his departure from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in June, Le Roy reveals that he had multiple offers from Mali, Equatorial Guinea, Tunisia, Hungary, as well as clubs in China, the Persian Gulf, and the Maghreb. Despite the tempting options, Le Roy, with discussions initiated by his agent Gaël Mahé, ultimately chose Congo for its status as a genuine footballing nation.
Le Roy explains, “Because it’s a real football country. And I am convinced that he has an interesting future.” He highlights Congo’s football history, noting its prominence in the seventies when it was one of the best selections in Africa, winning the CAN in 1972.
