Hansi Flick says Barcelona’s meeting with Real Madrid carries significance far beyond the three points at stake, as he raised expectations ahead of Sunday’s Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou.
The Barcelona manager said his side were prepared for the La Liga fixture, which will be played as part of the 10th round, and expressed confidence in the squad before one of football’s most eagerly anticipated matches.
“The Clasico is different. It is the best match in our sport and everyone will watch it,” Flick said at his pre-match news conference. “It is incredible. It is true that we are playing for only three points, but the importance of the match goes far beyond that.
“We are happy to be involved in this event and we are looking forward to the game. We are ready and we have great confidence in our team.”
Flick also praised Rodri’s contribution since joining Barcelona, saying the midfielder had already made a valuable impact during his first matches.
“We were all convinced that he would develop when we had the opportunity to sign him,” Flick said. “He has brought something valuable to the team, as we saw in his first games. I am very happy to have him with us.
“The midfield also has great quality with him alongside Pedri.”
Barcelona’s preparations have followed their defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Flick said the coaching staff had reviewed the match with the players and examined the reasons for the loss in an effort to correct their mistakes and improve their performances.
“We did many things well, but there are aspects that we need to improve,” he said. “This defeat is an opportunity to develop and grow, to challenge ourselves and work on improving as a team.”
The German also highlighted the progress of young player Xavi Espart, saying his continued development would depend on maintaining his standards on the pitch.
Flick said the teenager had shown considerable promise and was currently producing excellent performances.
“We know how professional football is: performance is everything,” he said. “He has produced a great level, and that is remarkable. He has great potential and room to develop, and he is performing excellently at the moment.”
