Flamingos stumble against Poland as Nigeria suffer U-17 Women’s World Cup setback

Nigeria’s Flamingos have been handed an early setback at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B match on Saturday.

The Nigerian youngsters were unable to recover from a two-goal deficit at the Women’s Football Complex in Morocco, leaving them with little room for error as they attempt to progress from the group stage.

Goals from Wiktoria Skrzypczak and Natalia Skrok gave Poland control of the contest before Oluebube Umejiaku pulled one back for Nigeria late in the second half.

However, the Flamingos could not find a second equaliser, allowing their European opponents to claim all three points and leave Nigeria facing an uphill task in their remaining fixtures.

Poland punish Nigeria to take control

The two teams battled for an advantage in the early stages before Poland broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute.

Skrzypczak stepped up to convert a penalty, handing the European side the lead and putting Nigeria under pressure to respond.

The goal proved decisive in shaping the first half, with Poland heading into the interval holding a 1-0 advantage.

Nigeria returned after the break needing a stronger attacking performance to get back into the contest, but their efforts to restore parity were dealt another blow in the 66th minute.

Skrok found the net to double Poland’s lead, leaving the Flamingos with a difficult task in the closing stages.

The second goal increased the pressure on Nigeria, who needed to score twice to avoid defeat in their opening game.

Umejiaku sparks late hope

Nigeria refused to give up and found a breakthrough in the 79th minute through Umejiaku.

Her goal reduced the deficit to 2-1 and gave the Flamingos renewed hope of salvaging a result from the encounter.

With the scoreline now within reach, the Nigerian youngsters had an opportunity to push for a late equaliser and rescue a point.

However, Poland held on to protect their advantage and condemn Nigeria to defeat in their first appearance at the tournament.

The result means the Flamingos must improve in their remaining Group B matches if they are to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage alive.

Puerto Rico clash becomes crucial

Nigeria will turn their attention to Tuesday’s meeting with Puerto Rico, scheduled for October 20, as they seek their first points of the competition.

The fixture offers the Flamingos an opportunity to respond immediately to their opening defeat and strengthen their position in the group before facing a tougher challenge in their final match.

They are scheduled to take on defending champions Korea DPR on Friday, October 23, in what could prove a decisive encounter in determining their fate at the tournament.

With two group matches remaining, Nigeria will need to turn their attacking opportunities into goals while tightening up defensively after conceding twice against Poland.

The Flamingos entered the competition hoping to make a strong impression on the global stage, but their opening defeat has left them needing a positive response against Puerto Rico to revive their campaign.
