Five African players facing early Ligue 1 struggles in 2026-27

The opening weeks of the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season have proved difficult for several African players, with limited game time, a lack of attacking output, adaptation problems and injury all affecting their campaigns.

Here are five players whose situations merit attention after the first rounds of the French championship.

Mohamed Ouedraogo adapting at Lyon

Burkina Faso left-back Mohamed Ouedraogo is still adjusting to life at Olympique Lyonnais after arriving at the club in the summer of 2026.

The 23-year-old has made only five appearances in all competitions, recording one assist and playing 216 minutes. Lyon’s problems on the left side of defence have been highlighted by L’Equipe, which identified Ouedraogo’s performances as among the issues the club must address in that position.

He will need to find greater consistency if he is to establish himself in his manager’s plans. Ouedraogo previously said: “Lyon is the best place to take the next step.”

Faris Moumbagna short of opportunities at Marseille

Cameroon forward Faris Moumbagna has had very little playing time at Olympique de Marseille since the start of the season.

He has featured in five Ligue 1 matches but has played only 17 minutes, while contributing one assist. Such limited involvement has restricted his chances of regaining match sharpness and convincing the Marseille coaching staff to give him greater responsibility.

Gaziantep FK also identified Moumbagna as a potential signing during the summer transfer window. According to Africafoot, the Turkish Super Lig club wanted to take the Cameroon striker on loan.

Billal Brahimi waiting for a bigger role at Le Mans

Algerian winger Billal Brahimi is another player whose involvement has been limited. He has made five league appearances for Le Mans this season, totalling 96 minutes, without scoring or providing an assist.

Frequently used in a secondary role, Brahimi will need to make the most of his next opportunities to move higher in the attacking pecking order and have a greater influence on his team’s play.

Jim Allevinah yet to find attacking form

Gabon international Jim Allevinah has also struggled to make a decisive contribution for Angers.

After the first seven rounds, he has neither scored nor provided an assist in Ligue 1, despite starting several matches. His lack of attacking production comes during a difficult spell for SCO Angers, who have suffered heavy defeats by Brest, losing 5-1, and Marseille, losing 5-2.

The 31-year-old forward will need to rediscover his efficiency if he is to help his side change the direction of its season.

Injury halts Yacouba Kone’s progress at Troyes

Yacouba Kone’s difficulties have taken a more serious turn. The 19-year-old Ivorian forward had already been receiving limited playing time for Troyes before suffering a serious knee injury.

He came on against Angers on 19 September but was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher after only five minutes. Troyes manager Stephane Dumont had expressed pessimism and raised the possibility of a cruciate ligament rupture.

The injury could significantly interrupt Kone’s development.

Their reported market values are Mohamed Ouedraogo (€2m), Faris Moumbagna (€3.5m), Billal Brahimi (€1m), Jim Allevinah (€1m) and Yacouba Kone (€300,000).
